Behavior of the Upper Central Incisors after Rapid Maxillary Expansion in the Mixed Dentition: a Radiographic Longitudinal Study

Omar Gabriel da SILVA FILHO, Jesus Maués PINHEIRO JÚNIOR, Arlete de Oliveira CAVASSAN

This study was carried out to evaluate the behavior of the permanent upper central incisors of 10 patients in the mixed dentition, on the basis of long-cone periapical radiographs taken before and after rapid maxillary expansion as well as after the retention period (6 months after expansion) and during the follow-up period (1 year after expansion). The findings show a change in the inclination of the incisors during expansion, followed by a tendency of these to teeth return to their initial position along the post-expansion period. No signs of external root resorption were noticed consequently to the movement of these teeth.
