Evaluation of Rotational Relapse of the Second Lower Bicuspids in Orthodontically Treated Patients, Five Years Posttreatment

Dental rotation is considered one of the types of orthodontic movements that present the smallest stability in the posttreatment period. An evaluation of the dental casts was done to analyse the amount of relapse of the orthodontic rotation of second lower bicuspids five years after the end of the treatment. It was also the purpose of this investigation to make a correlation between the observed relapse rate and the following variables: patient age at the beginning of treatment, initial rotation, length of treatment and degree of correction performed. No additional procedure was done to enhance the stability of the teeth position, like overcorrection or surgical section of the supra-alveolar fibers. A new method of measurement was developed to perform this analysis, using the AUTOCAD R12 program. The results of the study demonstrated that the amount of relapse observed in this study was not statistically significant. By the correlation, the degree of correction performed was the only variable found to influence on the observed relapse rate.
