Construction of Efficient Force Systems in Orthodontics

Alcion Alves SILVA

Orthodontic treatment planing considers not only a detailed data collection to elucidate those etiologic factors causing malocclusion but also the construction and supervision of efficient force systems to achieve dental movement and correct dentoskeletal disharmony. Members, connections em supports of an orthodontic appliance are considered as a structure and machine which may be submitted to structural analysis. Routine procedures during mounting and activation of an orthodontic appliance suggest that the professional must be alert to avoid friction, stress and distortion on the force system structure which may restrict dental movement as planned initially. In this sense, the choice of a certain appliance and other materials to be used for a case in each phase of treatment is crucial. Besides the physical complexity when planing a force system, the clinician must consider that forces will spread on the biological tissues that respond favorably or not according to the magnitude, direction and time of stimuli established.
