A new rapid maxillary expander is presented. The cephalometric study objected to evaluate the orthodontic and orthopedic changes on sixteen patients subjected to rapid expansion of the maxilla and they were divided into two groups, according to the rapid palatal expansion appliance used: one group of eight patients who wore banded rapid palatal expansion aplliance advised by HAAS and another group of eight patients who wore half fixed with contention coat occlusal bonded rapid palatal expansion appliance on the posterior teeth advised by FALTIN JR. The results were statistically conclued that: - on those patients who wore HAAS’ appliance were observed: maxillary depth increase, facial axis open, palatal plane increase related to Frankfurt’s plane; - related to that group of patients who wore the appliance advised by FALTIN JR. no statistical changes were found, this fact is indicating the appliance’s utilization for patients with tendency of vertical growth and/or anterior open bite. Clinically some significant alterations were observed due to the use of both appliances: HAAS’ appliance as well as FALTIN JR’S one.
