Behavior of the Permanent Canine in the Cleft Area in Relation to Secondary Bone Grafting

This article describes the role that secondary bone grafting plays upon the treatment protocol for patients with alveolar clefts and, on the basis of panoramic radiographs, assesses retrospectively and longitudinally the behavior of the permanent canine after performance of the secondary bone grafting. Fifty patients who had undergone bone grafting prior to the eruption of the permanent canine, in the age range between 8 and 15 years, were analysed for a mean period of 3 years. Seventytwo per cent of the sample (36 patients) presented spontaneously erupted canines through the grafted area. Six per cent of the sample (3 patients) had to undergo orthodontic traction of the canines.
