Stability of Maxillary Advancement Associated with Inferior Repositioning: Comparison of two Methods of Internal Fixation

Ulisses COELHO, Mário Francisco Real GABRIELLI

This study evaluated the stability of maxillary advancements associated to inferior repositioning of the maxilla, comparing two different methods of internal fixation. Fifteen patients received intermaxilary fixation, interosseous wiring and skeletal suspensions. Seventeen patients received rigid internal fixation with plates and screws. All patients were bone grafted to enhance the stability of the inferior repositioning. The results were statistically analysed (ANOVA) and showed that: a) there was no statistically significant difference in stability of the anterior movement of the maxilla, b) the inferior repositioning was more stable with rigid internal fixation and c) rigid internal fixation associated with bone grafts does not totally eliminate vertical relapse.
