The Herbst appliance and its variations

Alexandre MORO, Acácio FUZIY, Marcos Roberto de FREITAS, José Fernando Castanha HENRIQUES, Guilherme R. P. JANSON

Usually, Class II treatment depends upon patient compliance with removable functional appliances, Class II elastics, and/or extraoral appliance. The Herbst appliance, by contrast, uses a cemented telescopic assembly to permanently position the mandible forward, eliminating the need for patient cooperation. This appliance was introduced by EMIL HERBST in 1905 and after being forgotten for many years it was reintroduced by PANCHERZ in 1979. Many variations of the design of this appliance have been developed over the years by different authors. Therefore, the objective of this article is to describe some types of attachment of the Herbst mechanism to the dental arches.

Keywords: Class II malocclusion. Mandibular growth. Herbst appliance.
