The “Jones Jig” Appliance: An Alternative to Distalize Upper Molars

For many years, distalization of the upper molars has been possible only with the extraoral appliance. Nowadays, new devices that need no patient cooperation are available, such as the “Jones Jig”. The “Jones Jig” is indicated for small distalizations, mainly unilateral. It is clear that this device is not capable of overcoming the effect of the extraoral appliance. In situations where maxillary orthopedic alterations, great molar distalization and great anchorage control are needed, it is imperative that the extraoral appliance should be the first choice. On the other hand, there are some restrictions as for the use of the extraoral appliance in Class I patients, as far as craniofacial growth is concerned. Therefore, orthodontists should always be aware of the effects of different appliances so that their indication is as adequate as possible.
