Bionator and Temporomandibular Disorders: Fact or Fiction?

Marcos Roberto de FREITAS, Ana Cláudia de Castro Ferreira CONTI, Paulo César Rodrigues CONTI, José Fernando Castanha HENRIQUES, Guilherme dos Reis Pereira JANSON

The aim of this paper was to discuss the possible role of orthopedic appliances as predisposing factor for Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). The anterior condyle position usually established for these patients used to be considered as an important etiologic factor for pain and dysfunction. On the other hand, some authors indicated anterior repositioning splints for treating TMJ internal derangements. Based on the literature, authors did not find scientific evidence to support a relationship between orthopedic therapy and signs and symptoms of TMD.

Keywords: Bionator. Temporomandibular Disorders. Etiology.
