The diagnostic of dentofacial abnormalities, associated to the knowledge about the dentofacial growth and development, allow the elaboration of an individual treatment plan, more adequate for each patient. Nowadays, the orthodontic treatment must considerate, beyond of the correction of the occlusal relationship, the obtainment of a esthetical and harmonious face, so that, each malocclusion must be treated in accordance to its skeletal and dental discrepancies. The Class II, division I, malocclusion, with an skeletal involvement may be treated by means of orthopedic aplliances to improve the sagital relationship. In this investigation, the changes deriving from two types of treatment of Class II, division I malocclusion were compared, involving patients of both sex with potencial of craniofacial growth. The first group was composed by 25 patients (12 males and 13 females), treated by edgewise fixed appliance, combined with cervical anchorage. The second group was composed by 25 patients (12 males and 13 females) treated, inicially, by a functional appliance, a headgear-activator combination, to get the normalization of the sagital relationship. After this phase, the treatment of this patients was finished with edgewise fixed appliance. The lateral cephalograms of each patient, taken at the beggining and at the end of the active treatment period, were evaluated to compare the cephalometrical changes of each group, considering the sexual dimorphism. The results demonstrated no significant changes in the different dentofacial structures between the two groups. In this study was found a statistical differences in position of lower incisors. Although, these changes may aid the facial esthetics in the patients of group II, represented by a bigger reduction with statistical differences of angle GlSn.Pog’ in these patients.
