Human Cranial Base Growth and Development in the First Six Months of Post-Natal Life

In this study, we analized dimensional alterations in the cranial base from the birth to the six months of life, through the growth of its anatomical structures (bones and spheno-occipital synchondrosis). We measured 28 half heads (midsagital plane cut), with a digital calipter “Mitutoyo, model SC-6 (0.1mm of resolution)”, to obtain the occipital, ethmoid and sphenoid bones dimensions. We obtened the dimensions of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis, sella turcica and the distances among basion-opstium, nasion-sella, basion-sella. We conclued that there was significant increase of all the osseous structures analysed in that life period. We observe that antero-posterior cranial base growth was more dependent of the alterations in the anterior portion of that area (represented by the ethmoid growth) than of its posterior portion (determined by the occipital growth).
