Modified Thurow Extraoral Appliance in the Class II With Open Bite Malocclusion Treatment - Clinical Report

The use of extraoral force to teeth and jaws relationships is a routine procedure in Orthodontics and presents two important variables in terms on its clinical application: the direction and attachment mechanism of the applied force. About the last one, generally the extra-oral appliance is inserted on buccal tubes on the first upper molars, although combinations of extraoral traction and removable appliances have also been proposed, as for example, the “Maxillary splint”, presented by Thurow in 1975. This appliance restricts the upper jaw growth and also allows a counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. The aim of this article is to present a clinical report in which a modified Thurow maxillary splint was used in the treatment of a Class II with open bite malocclusion.
