Serial Extraction Program: A Contemporary Orthodontic View

Omar Gabriel da SILVA FILHO, Terumi Okada OZAWA, Araci Malagodi de ALMEIDA, Patrícia Zambonato FREITAS

The authors report on the temporary and definitive primary crowding of the permanent incisors, whose incidence is around 50% in students in Bauru – SP, as well as on one type of early treatment for the negative tooth-bone discrepancy: the serial extraction. Serial extraction is indicated to correct genetic primary crowding. Deciduous teeth are extracted in the first transitional period of the mixed dentition and permanent teeth are extracted in the second transitional period. In this procedure, teeth are extracted early in order to minimize the biologic cost of the complete orthodontic treatment. The authors are optimistic about serial extraction, though early correction of the crowding does not necessarily indicate stability. Therefore, relapse should not be taken into account in the planning of an orthodontic treatment.
