Orthodontic Treatment of Class III Malocclusion With Lower First Molars Extractions.

Hiroshi MARUO

On May 1987’s American Journal of Orthodontics Editorial, Harry Dougherty made references about the arise of new techniques and philosophies that, many times, are modifications of already used methods, saying that when appliance is removed, it is impossible to say which was the treatment philosophy or what appliance was used. He also said that more important than the technique or philosophy used is to discriminate between the good and the bad treatment. As H. Dougherty asked, nowadays, considering the increase in quantity of graduate courses and orthodontic specialist professionals using modern techniques and better quality material, has the quality of the results improved or the duration of treatment decreased? Intending to give a better evaluation of these questions, we present these two Class III cases treated with lower first molar extractions. Considering that they were treated with the traditional Edgewise technique 15 years ago, would they be handled in a different way today? Or, mainly, would the results be better?
