Osvaldo MAGRO FILHO, Idelmo RANGEL-GARCIA JR, Natasha MAGRO-ERNICA, Daniel Rey de CARVALHO, Daniela PONZONI, Roger H. KALLAL

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by the repetitive collapse of the upper airway structures that interrupts or reduces the airflow during the sleep time. It causes low blood oxygen saturation and, consequently, several signals and symptoms correlated with the desease, including the death risk. The authors relate a retrognathic, class II patient with oral pharyngeal airway space smaller than 6 mm. The polyssonographic analysis showed severe sleep apnea classifi-cation. The treatment plane was mandibular advancement using bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, anterior genioglossus muscle reposi-tioning, and hyoid suspension. The polyssonographic analysis was repeated one year after the surgical-orthodontic treatment and the outcome was classified like a success.
