Description of the Method of Fixed Retention, with Free Access of the Dental Floss

This article presents a design of fixed retention that was published by Lew17 in 1989, in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, and that has been used and studied in our clinic for more than five years. It is an appliance that is well accepted by the patients, even during the longest periods of retention, because it doesn‘t keep the patient from normally using the dental floss. The plaque can be easily removed from the proximal areas of the teeth without the need of removing the retention. This provides the patient with the perfect condition for maintening the periodontal health. This appliance is also indicated for patients with serious bone losses and that will need the retention permanently. It is easily made and it may be used in the most different combinations, such as, for example, superior and inferior 3x3, superior 2x2, or yet, superior 1x1. Three cases followed by the authors were included in this article.
