Facial Profile Analysis in Standardized Photographs

The purpose of this research is to evaluate a facial profile analysis using standardized photographs in order to be used as a routine procedure in the orthodontic practice in a simple, practical and reliable way. The sample used consisted of 40 white female subjects with a mean age of 22 years. They presented a pleasant profile, normal occlusion, and had not been treated previously. Colorful standardized 10X15 cm photographs were obtained with the patients in their natural head position. Fourteen facial variables were analyzed with linear, angular and proportional measurements, submitted to statistical tests. The results of this study indicated that a facial profile analysis in photographs, based only on the soft tissue of the face, is a reliable and useful method in the diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning.
