Alteration of the Occlusal Plane Cant in Orthognathic Surgery

Andrea Goes ACERBI, José RINO NETO, João Batista de PAIVA, Marcelo Melo SOARES

This paper reviews the existing literature on the manipulation of the occlusal plane in orthognathic surgery. The occlusal plane angulation may be increased through clockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex, or reduced through mandible autorotation or counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex. The three procedures are described and their indications are discussed, as well as their esthetic results and possible implications on the function and morphology of the temporomandibular joints. The issue is relevant to both orthodontists and surgeons, since the alteration of the occlusal plane angulation may significantly influence the esthetic and functional results of the surgical-orthodontic treatment of dentofacial deformities.
