The permanent canines have an importance for the esthetics of the smile and the masticatory function. For these reasons, it is important for the orthodontist, to expeditiously diagnose an ectopic pathway of irruption of the canines using clinical and radiographic data, in the attempt to prevent the clamping of these teeth. Although there are many conservative alternatives of handling, in some occasions the extraction of the retained teeth is indicated. The purpose of this article is to present a clinical case treated with this approach considering the important steps that must be followed when extraction of one of the permanent canines is attempted.
