Mesial-distal Diameter Determination of Cuspid and Premolars in Brazilian Individuals from Araraquara

Ronald de Freitas PAIXÃO, Rita de Cássia L. CORDEIRO, Luiz GANDINI JÚNIOR

Prediction of cuspid and premolars mesial-distal (MD) diameter using the sum of the lower incisors (Moyers’ method) was tested in 154 (Brazilian) caucasian patients from Araraquara, SP. The patients, 76 males and 78 females, varied from 12-17 years of age. MD diameter of all permanent teeth from second premolar one side to the other were measured in plaster models for both upper and lower arches. Individual and group of teeth were tested for correlation. The sum of the lower incisors was then correlated with the sum of the upper posterior teeth (cuspid and premolars), and the sum of the lower incisors with the lower posterior teeth (cuspid and premolars). The probability tables obtained from that cross tabulation were then compared with Moyers’ table. The results showed greater MD diameter for males than for females. MD tooth diameter was also greater for Brazilian than for American (Moyers’ table) patients. The results indicated that the Moyers’ method underestimates the prediction of the cuspid and premolars MD diameter of Araraquara patients.
