DAI and IOTN Index Assessment in the Prognosis of Malocclusions and Requirement of Orthodontic Treatment

Angela Cristina Pinto de Paiva CUNHA, José Augusto MIGUEL, Kenio Costa LIMA

This study was carried out in initial study models of patients treated at the Graduation Course in Orthodontics offered by FOUERJ with the objective of analyzing the presence or absence of malocclusions, the aesthetic damage and the degree of need for orthodontic treatment of these patients, through the use of the DAI and IOTN indexes. The sample of this study was composed of 120 study models, which corresponded to 10% of the treated cases at the course. The data collection instruments were: a plastic rule to evaluate the occlusal characteristic of the DHC component and a visual aesthetic scale to evaluate the aesthetic damage of the AC component based on the parameters commended by IOTN; An OMS periodontal probe to evaluate the occlusal characteristic commended for the DAI. The results showed that more than 70% of the studied cases had a severe need for orthodontic treatment in agreement with both indexes. Even so, when evaluating the quantitative and qualitative agreement among the indexes, using the Spearman and Kappa coefficients, these didn’t present statistical significance because of the peculiar characteristics of index. The more frequent occlusal characteristics in these cases were: superior maxillary overjet above 3,5mm, crowding and dental absence. The occlusal indexes are not able to substitute basic orthodontic documentation and neither were they conceived to fulfill this objective.

Keywords: Occlusal Indexes. Orthodontic Treatment Need. Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Dental aesthetic index (DAI).
