Jorge ABRÃO, Paulo Cezar Rodrigues OGEDA

Recently, the number of adult patients looking for orthodontic treatment has increased. In many of them the natural occlusal characteristics were lost due to missing or fractured teeth and dental wear, that caused absence of reference lines that could help their treatment planification. This paper brings some information that can be helpfull in planning treatment of such patients, and shows the importance of the occlusal plane construction in lateral and frontal view. The occusal plane is assessed in lateral and frontal cephalometrics, added to precise register of the dental arc position through assembling of plaster models in articulator, and several techniques of photografic takes, trying to study the occlusal plane considering it´s inclination and also the facial and dental characteristics in performing its functions. In lateral norm the adequate inclination of occlusal plane into the mean value proposed of 9º to Frankfurt, and passing 3mm below the lips union exibiting around 3mm of incisors edges. These characteristics are apropriate to its participation in the functional performance in harmony with the anterior and condylar guides, also keeping the best final esthetics. Adding to this the frontal occlusal plane obtained in postero-anterior cephalometric X-ray, and face photografic and model assembling in semi-adjustable articulator is assessed in two regions: posterior, the region of the first molars, and anterior, the center of the cuspid crown. Both should be paralel to the floor and the bipupilar line, enable us to be more precise during the practice of multidisciplinary reconstruction and orthodontics.
