Accuracy Assessment of Visual Acuity in Orthodontic Accessories Placement

Arnaldo PINZAN, Acácio FUZIY, Leniana Santos NEVES, Rodrigo Hermont CANÇADO

The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of the proper placement of orthodontic appliances, evaluating the reliability of visual acuteness upon positioning of an orthodontic accessory, verifying if the clinical experience may influence this positioning. For that purpose, diagrams with two reference lines, one vertical and one horizontal, were presented to graduate students in Orthodontics attending specialization, master or doctorate programs. The students were instructed to visually construct 3º, 5º and 7º angles from the reference lines. According to the results of the present study, it could be observed that the isolated reliability on visual acuteness, regardless of professional experience, was insufficient for the establishment of a correct angulation of the orthodontic accessory. Therefore, special care must be taken during placement of the orthodontic appliance, with employment of devices that can help in the correct angulation of the orthodontic accessories, such as angle measurement devices when the “Edgewise” technique is employed, with a view to avoid the undesirable consequences of improper dental angulation.
