Logitudinal Study of Oclusal Molars Relation and Canine in Class II Individuals (Angle)

Guilherme Drumond VANZIN, Daniel Souza Pinto RAMOS, Eduardo Martinelli Santayana de LIMA

The authors proposed to evaluate the modifications in occlusal relationships of molars and canines during the development of individuals who have Angle Class II malocclusion. Plaster models of 30 Caucasian Canadian individuals at the ages of 6, 9, 12, 14 and 16 years, who had not undergone orthodontic treatment, were analyzed. The relationship between molars and canines was numerically expressed towards both sides of the arch, using the following values: 1.00; 1.25; 1.50; 1.75; 2.00. The first number represents the Class I relationship, and the last four the Class II relationship, in an increasing order of malocclusion severity. The results were compared using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The means of relationships of the molars on the right and left sides at the age of 6 (1.73/1.73) do not present a significant difference with the means at the age of 9 (1.73/1.66), but were statistically different (p<0.05) from those obtained at the age of 12 (1.60/1.51), 14 (1.57/1.47) and 16 (1.56/1.49). In the canine relationships, the mean of the right side at the age of 9 (1.38) was statistically different (p<0.05), from those obtained at 6 (1,48), 12 (1.55), 14 (1.58) and 16 (1.57). On the left side, the mean obtained at the age of 9 (1.38) was statistically different (p<0.01) only from those obtained at the age of 14 (1.53) and 16 (1.54). It can be concluded that, in the relationship of the molars, the Class II malocclusion was maintained from deciduous dentition to the permanent one, with a trend to reducing the severity of malocclusion on both sides of the arch. In the canine relationship the Class II malocclusion was also maintained, from the deciduous to the permanent dentition, with a more marked trend to increased severity of malocclusion on the right side of the arch.
