Breathing and Chewing: a Comparative Study

Lia Inês Marino DUARTE, Leslie Piccolotto FERREIRA

The purpose of this article is to compare, through myofunctional evaluation, breathing and chewing on patients during orthodontic treatment, with and without associated myofunctional intervention. 17 patients presenting Angle’s Class II malocclusion were selected, the average age was 13,1. Patients were divided in two groups, one group received myofunctional intervention associated to the orthodontic treatment and the other group received only orthodontic treatment. Both groups went through four myofunctional evaluations in two year period. Comparing the two groups it was observed that the myofunctional intervention in Angle’s Class II malocclusion patients in orthodontic treatment was permanent. The orthodontic treatment promoted changes in the breathing and chewing patterns, although the results were not as significant as the results reported in the group with myofunctional intervention associated.
