An esthetic and functional approach of patient’s treatment orthodontic with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors

Nowadays, one of main purposes of the orthodontic treatment is to improve the facial esthetics, besides achieving a proper occlusion and function. This factor has a strong influence on the orthodontic planning and treatment, mainly concerning congenitally missing teeth, in special the maxillary lateral incisors. The therapy of maxillary lateral incisors involves two main approaches: the orthodontic space closure, and the opening or maintance of the spaces to future prosthetic rehabilitation or implants. In spite of both treatments present satisfactory results, this article will report the advantages of the space closure when compared to implants with regard to esthetics and function, justifying why most of the times the implants are not indicated to congenitally missing teeth cases.
