Orthodontic-surgical treatment of severe skeletal Class III malocclusion

Class III malocclusion is characterized by anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy, with or without vertical changes, but usually involving transverse problems. Although it has a low incidence in most of the population, a study of this sort of skeletal disharmony is motivated by its marked expression. Facial aspects of accessed individual is usually signiicantly changed, and this fact, associated with altered mastigatory function, are the principal reasons that motivate patients to look for treatment to solve this kind of malocclusion. Some speciic characteristics of this problem makes its treatment more dificult during growth, once intrinsical mandibular growth factors are dificult to control or to fully preview. Dental compensation or camoulage produce limited results, compromising quality at the end of treatment. Association between orthodontic approach and orthognatic surgery, when correctly diagnosed, indicated and conducted can obtain better results regarding function, occlusion and esthetics.
