Nogueira® lingual bonded spur: supporting treatment of atypical swallow by lingual pressure

Francisco Ferreira NOGUEIRA, Leonardo Melo MOTA, Paulo Roberto Aranha NOUER, Darcy Flávio NOUER

This article has the objective of presenting the orthodontic community with a new material denominated Nogueira® lingual bonded spur. This material was idealized and designed based on the principals of traditional spurs being developed and produced by the Abzil Company to realize a clinical research of atypical deglutition by lingual pressure. This material can be applied on both the upper or lower arch, after atypical lingual position diagnostic has been realized. Are presented three clinical cases of patients treated using the referred system associated to orthodontic treatment. Both patients were subjected to electromyography (EMG) exams beforehand, and 10 months after the beginning of treatment for the neuromuscular evaluation. The muscles that were evaluated were masseter, anterior temporal, anterior digastrics, and lower orbicular of the mouth, evaluation of the muscular activity (µυ) and the time of muscular contraction during deglutition(s). The obtained results were of a better inter arch relation in antero-posterior, vertical and transversal with the use of orthopedic appliances and used orthodontically and a better functioning of deglutition, phonation, and rest, this probably happened because no mark or wound was found on the tongue. In relation to the electromyography (EMG) there was a reduction of potentials (µυ) of the anterior digastrics peribuccal muscle and the lower orbicular of the mouth with an increase of contraction time, resulting in less protrusive activity of the tongue during deglutition.
