Anchorage comparative study provided by extraoral arch and transpalatal bar in the anterior teeth retraction therapy

Aim: The present study evaluated the efficiency of two orthodontic devices, the extraoral arch and transpalatal bar when used to anchorage control of upper first molars when two bicuspids were extracted. Methods: The samples were divided into two groups. Group 1 was composed by 14 patients that used the extraoral arch as anchorage control device and group 2 was composed by 16 patients that used the transpalatal bar as anchorage control device. Initial and final lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken before and after the retraction of anterior teeth, to compare the initial and final upper molar positions either in the quantitative (mesial molar movement) and in the qualitative (mesial inclination of molar crown) aspects. Results and Conclusions: The results showed that there was not significant statistical difference between the two evaluated groups in the quantitative aspects. However, the extraoral arch was more efficient in the qualitative aspect, since it permitted a minor mesial molar crown inclination when compared with transpalatal bar.
