Hyperbaric oxygen therapy associated with mandibular reconstruction

Reconstruction of mandibular defects occurring due to ablative tumor surgery remains challenging. In these cases, the gold standard of treatment is the application of reconstructive titanium plates in association with bone graft. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is an interesting complement for bone reconstruction, as it stimulates angiogenesis and osteogenesis, both of which are important during non-vascularized bone graft incorporation. his paper describes the case of a 30-year old woman who was diagnosed with mandibular osteoblastoma. he treatment of choice consisted in resection with maintenance of the mandibular base. he patient underwent 10 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy before and 40 after reconstruction. Subsequent non-vascularized iliac crest graft was performed twelve months later. Preservation of mandibular contouring and facial aesthetics were observed six months after mandibular reconstruction. Panoramic radiograph revealed good positioning of the bone graft as well as volume maintenance. Mandibular reconstruction is extremely important for the rehabilitation of patients undergoing bone resection. HBO in mandibular reconstruction proves an important adjunct to treatment success; however, further studies are needed to establish the best modalities of rehabilitation.
