Conservative management of keratocystic odontogenic tumor

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) is a lesion of odontogenic origin that distinguish from other lesions for presenting distinct histopathological features, aggressive clinical behavior, and a great potential for recurrence. In the context of a benign disease, the therapeutical purpose is to identify treatments that may reduce morbidity and recurrence. A 16-year-old female patient who presented painless lesion in the left mandibular ramus sought surgical treatment after finding a lesion in a routine radiographic examination. Incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a keratocystic odontogenic tumor. Given the lesion extension and proximity to important anatomical structures, decompression was planned. he patient currently presents 10 years of follow-up without any signs of recurrence. hough aggressive, KOT is considered a benign neoplasm. In this context, decompression proves a treatment method that presents minimum morbidity and low-rate recurrence. In the presented case, decompression followed by curettage showed to be successful, preventing the patient from undergoing a resection procedure, which would result in considerable aesthetic and functional morbidity. he device was efective and decompression proved to be a viable  technique.
