Use of polymethylmethacrylate as an alternative to mandibular condyle reconstruction

Among the benign tumors affecting the jaw, some exhibit locally aggressive behavior, requiring large bone resections, which makes mandibular reconstruction a challenge, especially when involvement of the mandibular condylar process occurs. he objective of this study is to present the case of a patient with an extensive solid ameloblastoma involving condylar process. he patient was submitted to hemimandible resection with disarticulation and immediate reconstruction with titanium plate and polymethylmethacrylate prosthesis and the auxiliary positioning prosthesis technique. Options for reconstruction in these cases include autogenous bone graft and alloplastic material. Alloplastic titanium material presents good results, but with relatively high costs. Among the alternatives, the polymethylmethacrylate prosthesis has the following advantages: easy availability, good adaptability, biocompatibility and low cost. he use of polymethylmethacrylate prosthesis as an alternative in the reconstruction after resection of the TMJ condyle is a viable option, as it is a technique of low cost, easy availability and predictability, as well as satisfactory aesthetic and functional results.
