Clinical and radiographic evaluation of implants: Retrospective study

Introduction: The amount of available bone height is one of the limiting factors in determining the length of the implant. Areas such as the posterior region of the maxilla, due to expansion of the maxillary sinus after dental loss, and the posterior region of the mandible, due to proximity to the mandibular canal, often preclude installation of long implants. Thus, due to anatomical limitations, implants installed in these regions are often shorter than those installed in the anterior areas. Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the clinical performance of implants 5.7mm, 6 mm and bigger than 6 mm in length used by the team of professionals of Faculdade de Odontologia de Araraquara, with a follow-up of more than 3 years, through clinical and radiographic analyses. Results: Clinical examination revealed absence of pain, infection, periimplant inflammation or mobility in almost all cases. Out of 24 implants installed, 22 fulfilled the criteria of success established by this research. Conclusion: Data suggested a success rate of 90% for implants up to 6 mm in length and 92.82% for implants bigger than 6 mm in length.
