Odontogenic infection: analyses in the hospital environment

Objective: This research aimed to approach the occurrence of odontogenic infection requiring medical care and the different possibilities of evolution of cases, in addition to assessing the therapeutic approach used. Methods: Data were obtained by assessing files of patients treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology section of Universidade de Passo Fundo (Brazil) between 2000 and 2008. Results: Results revealed that, in most cases, microbiological examination was not performed, with antimicrobial treatment being chosen empirically. The most frequently used was cefazolin, while the most identified microorganism was ‘Staphylococcus aureus’. Drainage combined with antibiotic therapy was the most established treatment. Conclusion: Clinical evaluation, early diagnosis of infection and appropriate treatment for infection of primary facial spaces may inhibit further spread to secondary facial spaces
