Should Facial Aesthetic Surgery be the area of competence of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon?

The Facial Aesthetic Surgery is an internationally recognized area of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. However, the CFO 03/1999 resolution prohibited the practice of this area to the specialty in Brazil. This prohibition goes against the International Guidelines for Education and Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, proposed by the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IACOMS), which states that oral surgeons should have training in all scope of the specialty. This article discuss why we were prohibited to practice Facial Aesthetic Surgery and the repercussions of this impidiment in our training and on the development of the specialty.
