Mandibular reconstruction with patient-specific implant after ameloblastoma resection: case report

Carlos Eduardo X. S. Ribeiro da Silva, André Carvalho Rodriguez, Daniela Marti Costa, Marcio Martins

Ameloblastoma is a benign neoplasm, locally aggressive, with a high potential for recurrence, whose resection can cause important mutilations in the facial skeleton, depending on its extension. The present study aims to describe a case of a female patient whose mandibular body and part of the mandibular angle were removed, due to the presence of ameloblastoma, and its reconstruction was performed with two osteosynthesis plates. About five years later, there was a failure of the fixation ma- terial, after a car crash. Virtual planning, prototyping and a patient-specific implant were carried out, which extended from the chin region and included the temporo-mandibular joint. As a result, the patients functional and aesthetic reestablishment was satisfactory. It can be concluded that reconstructions of major defects in the jaw bones continue to be a major challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
