Dentifrices for dentin hypersensitivity treatment

Introduction / Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is characterized as acute, local, short-duration pain of complex and multifactorial etiology . It is associated with processes such as attrition, erosion and abrasion. Dentifrices are highly recommended primarily due to low cost and ease of use. Dentifrices have two major mechanisms of action: 1) Desensitization by blocking painful stimulus; and 2) Action on physical tubule occlusion, acting in the cause and, therefore, preventing painful stimuli transmission. / Objective / Discuss the featured scientiic evidence that encompasses the indication, limitation and prospect of rational dentifrices use. / Methods / his article presents a literature review on the diferent formulations of dentifrices used for dentine hypersensitivity treatment, including potassium and strontium salt-based, stannous luoride combined with or without sodium hexametaphosphate, and the socalled dentifrices containing arginine and calcium carbonate or calcium sodium phosphosilicate. Potential additional therapeutic efects were also analyzed. / Conclusion / Dentifrices are important for dentine hypersensitivity treatment. Current formulations of arginine and calcium carbonate or calcium sodium phosphosilicate prove a good alternative; however, other active ingredients should be listed in accordance with patient's hypersensitivity.
