Introduction / Silver amalgam is a type of restorative material frequently used in Dentistry due to its properties which ensure durability, easy handling and low cost despite controversy over the toxicity of mercury, one of its main components. Mercury is a liquid, heavy and extremely toxic metal to which various systemic and neurological efects are attributed as a result of exposure to its residues and vapors. It is also associated with potential harm that amalgam restoration patients might sufer. Additionally, health, environmental and occupational risks are also observed. / Objective / We conducted a literature review about the controversy involved in the use of silver amalgam restorations associated with potential efects on patients' and the oral health team's health. Replacement of restorative material and potential environmental hazards were also assessed. / Conclusion / It is reasonable to assert that dental amalgam should not be used in cases of irst restorations, as advances in dental industry allow the dental surgeon to perform restorations with greater durability without harming patient's and oral health team's health. Several precautions must be taken when replacing defective amalgam restorations, so as not to worsen contamination at dental oices and harm patient's and clinician's health.
