Comparison between cone-beam computed tomography and clinical analysis used to measure soft tissue thickness

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to compare facial mucosa thickness, measured by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), with clinically measured mucosa thickness, in order to validate this technique. Methods: Using a tomographic guide to reproduce the same spot to be measured, a CBCT was taken for soft tissues visualization, and soft tissue thickness was measured on the image. A clinical measurement obtained at the time of implant placement was performed in the same area. Results: The measurements obtained were compared and they were very similar, with no clinically relevant differences, whenever they were present. Both clinical and imaging measurements were highly correlated. Conclusion: CBCT examination is a reliable technique to visualize and measure facial thickness of dentoalveolar soft tissues before dental implant placement.
