Biomechanics of compensatory treatment of Class III malocclusion using extra-alveolar skeletal anchorage

Introduction: Orthodontic camouflage can be employed in Class III patients especially when bone discrepancies and facial profile are acceptable. Significant dental tooth movement can be expected in young adult Class III patients treated with skeletal anchorage. Objective: The objective of the present study was to report a clinical case of a young adult patient who presented with anterior open bite and skeletal Class III malocclusion. The patient was treated with a nonsurgical approach carried out by means of skeletal anchorage with mini-implants to retract the entire mandibular arch. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the use of extra-alveolar mandibular buccal shelf mini-implants can be a viable solution during the retraction of the entire mandibular dentition in a camouflage treatment of Class III malocclusion. It proves a good alternative to the use of mini-plates.
