Uprighting and mesialization of an unerupted third molar: a case report

Adilson Luiz Ramos

Third molars are usually extracted due to lack of space in the dental arch. They frequently do not erupt, remaining in mesial angulation that can put the integrity of second molars at risk. Once it has been decided for extraction, the surgical risks involved include paresthesia which can occur due to proximity to the mandibular nerve. The literature has reported orthodontic intervention carried out before surgery in order to minimize that risk. The present article reports uprighting followed by mesialization of an unerupted third molar, as part of treatment of a patient with Class II malocclusion, deep overbite, crowding and absence of tooth #36.
