Finalization in cases with asymmetric extractions: limitations and adaptations

Roberto Carlos Bodart Brandão, Licia Pacheco Teixeira

Appropriate finalization is fundamental to the success of orthodontic treatment, especially in cases of asymmetric extractions. The unstable occlusion observed at the end of treatment requires strategies and adaptations to obtain a balanced and esthetic occlusion. Material and Methods: This article describes a clinical case of a Class II, second division, right subdivision patient, who sought orthodontic treatment due to an unpleasant smile. The molar intercuspidation, the interaction between esthetic and occlusion, and the limits and adaptations required for the orthodontic finalization of asymmetric extraction cases were also addressed in this article. Results: After the orthodontic treatment, a significant improvement in the esthetics of the patients smile and masticatory function was accomplished. Conclusions: It is feasible to achieve a balanced occlusion in asymmetric extraction cases. However, it is necessary to incorporate small strategies that aim at a more stable dental occlusion.

Keywords: Tooth extraction. Dental occlusion. Dental esthetic. Orthodontics.
