Eruption of the permanent canine after rhBMP-2 secondary alveolar cleft repair: case reports

This paper aim to discuss the eruptive path of permanent canines after secondary alveolar bone grafting with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein in cleft lip and palate patients. Irruptive disorders of maxillary canines in patients without orofacial cleft are due to the ectopic development and eruption determined by genetic factors. What about patients with cleft lip and palate? Maxillary canines remain retained due to genetic developmental reasons or in face of local factors such as the presence of cleft and a possible mechanical barrier determined by alveolar bone graft? These issues are discussed through the presentation of three interesting clinical reports with different eruption paths of maxillary permanent canine at the cleft area.
