Gingival smile: A periodontal point of view

Objective/ The aim of this study was to present the determining factors for diagnosis, treatment plan and performance of gingival smile correction from a periodontal point of view. / Methods / A literature review was conducted to expose and discuss the etiology and the basic parameters to treat gingival smile. Furthermore, two clinical cases were presented. / Conclusion / Surgery for correction of gingival smile is a predictable procedure in which one achieves the result during surgery without patient morbidity. However, the professional must have knowledge of the periodontal parameters and esthetic standards involved so as to yield favorable and harmonious outcomes.
