Introduction / MandibularSymphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO) has beenused to treat mandibular crowding associated with atresia./ Objective / To evaluate, by means of analysis ondental casts, the effects of MSDO on the lower arch ofpatients wearing tooth-borne appliance. / Methods / Thesample comprised 14 patients (5 males and 9 females)aged between 13 and 19 years old, with a mean ageof 15.74 ± 1.89 years at treatment onset. Dental castswere obtained at treatment onset (T1), three months afterMSDO (T2) and at the end of treatment when the ixedappliances were removed (T3). Data were statistically analyzedby means of ANOVA and Duncan’s test. / Results /Results reveal that all transverse widths increased afterMSDO, arch length did not undergo statistically signiicantchanges, arch perimeter increased significantly and Irregularity Index decreased, thereby relecting upon crowdingcorrection. Posterior teeth had greater cuspid than cervicalexpansion, suggesting potential tipping caused by thetooth-borne appliance. All measurements demonstratedevidence of relapse varying from 2.8% to 8.84%. / Conclusion/ The indings of this study suggest that MSDO isan eficient treatment alternative for crowding and transversemandibular deiciency.
