Modified surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion technique: esthetic and biological benefits

Introduction: Surgically assisted maxillary expansion is a technique used to correct transverse maxillary deficiency, a dentofacial anomaly related to a decrease in the width of the upper arch in relation to the lower arch. It is employed in patients in their late teens as well as in adults due to their skeletal maturity and strengthening of the intermaxillary suture, which is required in the orthodontic procedure associated to the surgery. The objective of the present paper is to describe surgically-assisted maxillary expansion carried out by means of a modified technique, and point out potential advantages of this modification, such as maintaining esthetics, the greatest long-term stability possible, the fastest return to orthodontic treatment, and improvement in bone healing. Contraindications are cases of severe crowding, converging roots of canines and lateral incisors and patients undergoing reverse maxillary protraction with a face mask.
