MARPE technique protocol in patients with variation in the skeletal volume of the palate

Introduction: Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) has been one of the main alternatives of orthopedic treatment of the maxilla for adult patients who have already reached skeletal maturity. Reduced thickness in palatal region is one of the limitations of the technique. Objective: The purpose of this article is to present, by means of two clinical cases, an alternative for this situation, with a modification of MARPE technique protocol using two additional mini-implants in anterior palate region. Result: Significant disruption of midpalatal suture was observed with the modified expander. Conclusion: Case reports suggest that clinical steps using the proposed protocol proved to be effective for skeletal maxillary expansion in young adult patient with reduced bone thickness in palatal region, offering a less invasive and less burdensome solution than surgically-assisted expansion, currently
