Treatment of bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion in a patient with impacted canine associated with odontoma: case report

Introduction: The treatment of bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion often requires dental extractions in order to decrease the profile convexity and allow passive lip sealing. In such clinical situation, applying skeletal anchorage for anterior teeth retraction may eliminate side effects and reduce patient compliance, which contributes to more efficient orthodontic treatment. Objective: To report a clinical case to illustrate the benefits of skeletal anchorage for anterior teeth retraction, and the possibility of functional occlusion with canine extraction. Case report: Angle Class I patient with bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, anterior open bite and an impacted maxillary canine associated with odontoma, submitted to orthodontic treatment with dental extractions and mini-implants as anchorage devices. Results: Mutually protected occlusion with group function was obtained on the side that the premolar replaced the canine; in addition, there was an aesthetic improvement with the incisors proclination correction. Conclusion: Applying skeletal anchorage for space closing promotes adequate anterior teeth inclination and posterior anchorage control.
